Zirconium bricks are generally pressed semi-dry and calcined at 1600℃. It is usually quadrature columnar, the softening temperature under load is greater than 1550℃, the melting point is generally 2430℃, and the apparent porosity is 0%~18%. This type of refractory brick is mainly used for lining of steel ladle and sizing nozzle for continuous steel injection.

Zirconium bricks manufacturing has high temperature resistance, good thermal shock resistance, slag and glass corrosion resistance and other excellent properties. It is stable in oxidizing atmosphere and does not react with molten metal.

It is important to note, that when the zirconium is heated to a certain temperature, it can decompose into cryptocrystalline ZrO2 and amorphous SiO2. Because of the purity of zirconium and the impurity, the size of raw material and the different holding time, the decomposition temperature of zirconium is not the same. The decomposition temperature ranges from 1540 ℃ to 2000℃. Zirconium was heated for 2h at 1600℃, and only a small amount of zirconium was decomposed. When heated for 2h at 1750℃, the decomposition rate of zirconium is 50%. When heated to 1900℃ ~ 2000℃, the decomposition rate can reach 100%. The presence of impurities such as Al2O3 CaO reduces the decomposition temperature of zirconium.

Therefore, when preparing zirconium clinker, its pre-firing temperature must be lower than the decomposition temperature of zirconium (1540℃).
